School Profile

The History of Lee V. Pollard High School:
In the mid seventies, a visionary educator saw students in need. The high schools were performing well, but not each student was connecting to his or her school. Not every student was succeeding. Lee Pollard saw the need to develop a high school for students who were focused on an occupation and for those who were inspired by more than classroom studies.

In September of 1977, Buena Vista High School opened with some specific goals in mind" "To provide an educational alternative for students...To provide a program of instruction, work experience, and community experiences...To provide educational instruction at varying ability levels...To develop, maintain, and improve an occupational program...To enable each student to meet the requirements for a high school diploma..." In short, Mr. Pollard, supported by a forward-thinking School Board and working with an energetic teaching staff, sought ways to promote the success and inspire the imagination of students.

The Buena Vista School Cobras (yes...Cobras) were off to a great start. Partnerships with local businesses were formed and students were working and learning throughout the community. Many who previously struggled were finding success.

In an article printed in the 1985 yearbook, student Yolanda Perez wrote, "When the school opened, a unique group of eleventh and twelfth grade students made their way to the district's only occupational high school...Buena Vista is a school where you can get a job and a good education at the same time."

Also in 1985, the school acquired a new mascot, and student Kelly Doorish wrote in that same yearbook, "The lion stands for pride, power, and hope. That's what Buena Vista is all about." We've been lions ever since.

Other principals have served at Buena Vista since it opened, and Mr. Pollard went on to serve our district in a variety of ways over thirty-nine years. In 2001, he became our Superintendent and led our district until his retirement in June of 2007. All were saddened by his passing in October of 2007.

On July 1, 2008, Buena Vista High School was renamed to honor Mr. Pollard, his vision, and leadership. Lee V. Pollard High School will continue to serve students as our first principal taught us: with Pride, Power, and Hope.
