Ms. Lopez-Jones

lopez jonesTeaching is my passion. I have 28 years experience teaching Language Arts and English Language Development. I have taught in middle schools, high schools and  in adult education. I have been fortunate to mentor my former scholars, many aspiring to become teachers and counselors; this has given me multiple perspectives in how vital community building is.

I strongly believe language is the connecting human experience which allows us to tell  our stories. I love sharing with my scholars how life was like for me growing up in a bilingual and bicultural environment.  I was born in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico and came to the states (with my familia) when I was only five years of age. I grew up in East South Central Los Angeles in the 70's; thus, I have seen and lived many historical moments. Most importantly, I want my scholars to enrich my classroom through their narratives and their unique experiences. We are a community of storytellers, writers, artists, and leaders. My digital and physical classroom is a safe space where we discover our unique "voice" that empowers us to transform ourselves and thus our world.

Family participation is quintessential as my scholars will involve you through interviews and asking for clarifications on their autobiographical and biographical writing assignments. Family histories and community knowledge is pivotal to anchor children in their understanding of "self".
